How Littering Impacts Our Animals – An Educational Call to Action for US Pet Owners

Every day, countless animals in the US suffer due to improperly disposed of litter. This issue escalates in the summer months, a time when we should be enjoying the beauty of nature, not harming it. The true scale of this problem is likely much larger than we realize, as many injured animals are never found. Our daily choices in disposing of waste can make a significant difference, particularly for our furry friends and beloved pets.

What to Do If You Encounter an Animal Injured by Litter

If you come across a wild animal harmed by litter, it's crucial to know how to help. This guide provides step-by-step instructions on assisting these vulnerable creatures.

The Hidden Dangers in Everyday Items

Items like plastic bags, which seem harmless, can be deadly traps for animals. They can cause suffocation or choking if animals get inside or try to eat them. A simple act, like tying a knot in plastic bags before recycling, can save lives.

Plastic Can Holders and Balloons: Lesser-Known Threats

Animals can become entangled in plastic can holders, leading to deep wounds or choking. Cutting the loops before recycling can prevent such tragedies. Balloons, often released in celebrations, pose a severe choking hazard. Opt for environmentally-friendly alternatives to protect our wildlife.

The Menace of Sky Lanterns and Containers

Sky lanterns, though beautiful, can be a source of injury or entrapment for animals. Containers and cans, too, pose risks of entrapment and injury. By cleaning, emptying, and safely disposing of these items, we can significantly reduce these dangers.

Elastic Bands, Fishing Tackle, and Glass: Small Items, Big Impact

These everyday items can cause choking or injury. Responsible disposal and recycling can mitigate these risks.

Vapes: An Emerging Threat

In the US, the growing trend of disposable vapes has introduced a new kind of litter. These items, if not properly disposed of, become a choking hazard for wildlife. By disposing of vapes safely, we can protect our environment and its inhabitants.

Join the Movement: Protect Our Wildlife

As a nation of animal lovers, it's up to us to lead the way in responsible waste disposal. By making small changes in how we handle our trash, we can make a big difference in protecting the animals we cherish. Share this message with your community, and let's work together to keep our wildlife safe!

What is Being Done? Here are some recycling programmes from the United States Environmental Protection Agency

Draft National Recycling StrategyEPA has developed the draft National Recycling Strategy with a focus on advancing the national municipal solid waste (MSW) recycling system. It identifies strategic objectives and stakeholder-led actions to create a stronger, more resilient, and cost-effective recycling system.

Recycling Pledge: EPA invites U.S.-based organizations to sign the America Recycles pledge. Signing the pledge signifies interest in participating in dialogue and taking action to improve the recycling system.

America Recycles DayEvery year on November 15, the EPA reminds us of the importance and impact of recycling through education and outreach.

Basel Convention: The United States is a signatory to the Basel Convention, but has not yet become a Party to the Convention. The Basel Convention establishes standards for the transboundary movement of various types of waste.
